‘21 things I’ve learned

December is always an introspective month for me.

This is why for the last three years I've made it a habit, at the conclusion of the year, to share a miscellany of episodes and experiences of wisdom I've gained over the last 12 months: arbitrary trivia facts, lessons learned along the way, and of course, some embarrassments endured.

My hope is that in sharing this short list you might feel inspired to reflect upon your own past year and call to mind all the ways you've grown and changed.

The following list is never usually comprehensive, but it always feels perfect to me—for the very reason it's random and real, the very act of letting it be what it needs to be makes it feel enough for me.

Things I've learned in 2021:

  1. Sometimes all you really need is to sit in your car.

  2. Heartache and disappointment are not dictated by geography, time, or season.

  3. It’s spelt free r-e-i-n, not free r-e-i-g-n.

  4. Time is like money: just because you have it, doesn’t mean you should spend it.

  5. More often than not, an ailment can be cured through drinking water or walking aimlessly.

  6. Everyone is looking for you to respond. Sometimes the best thing to do is not.

  7. Listening to the Bible on a daily basis so often satisfies in the most unexpected ways.

  8. You will fall into a creek when you least expect it to.

  9. Effective advocacy requires tough questioning.

  10. Sabering a bottle of champagne is great fun.

  11. Keep your standards high and expectations low.

  12. Being bitter never makes me better.

  13. If you don’t put the brakes on, God eventually will.

  14. Being an auntie truly is one of my favorite identities.

  15. Just because I derive a lot of joy from being organized doesn’t mean others do.

  16. True friends stay by your side even — and especially —when you don’t feel like yourself.

  17. Rubbing alcohol kills bacteria in 10 seconds, but hydrogen peroxide takes 10 minutes.

  18. It’s amazing what can happen when you take your time.

  19. An abundance mindset is a grace, not a given.

  20. Savannah, GA is as charming as it is chalked up to be.

  21. There are no coincidences.

What have you learned this year?
